CHACHIPE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION with EXHIBITIONS

Jury Chair and Curator of the Chachipe exhibition at the OSA Archives. My curatorial proposal to the OSA Archives was to set up a photographic/ethnographic field trip project at the beginning and at the end of the ten year period of the Roma Decade 2005-15. The photographer Dorothea Lange's work during the Great Depression was not altogether different, albeit without the book-ended timeframe I proposed. My concept was grounded in comparative analysis, using the tools of documentary photography and ethnography: to photograph and interview the same families across a representative geographic axis twice: at the beginning and at the end of the Roma Decade. The idea that drove my thinking was that such a comparative analysis of a few families along an extended period of time would provide visual (and other) insights about the subjects and society at large. OSA and OSI opted to go with a series of photographic competitions instead. They commissioned me as the chair of the jury and the curator of the exhibition at the OSA Archives Gallery for the first exhibition, which then travelled internationally. (2007)
